Meditation Sixteen

We are amazing.

We have to keep telling each other that—keep validating, building up, pushing the positive. Like oxygen, positive comments help sustain and rejuvenate us.

The power of spirit can be felt when two people share.

Out…in…out…in…like breathing.

When someone tells us something wonderful about us, we gain confidence in ourselves. We do fit. We are valued.

When we look into another person and express the goodness we find, we gain confidence in the world around us. Life is good. Beauty is everywhere.

To receive and give compliments may feel a little awkward at first. Especially if the other person is not someone you know well, or care to get to know. To cope with the self-consciousness that receiving a compliment can generate, remind yourself that you are merely doing your part to enhance the life experience of another person. And to offset the feeling of coming across like a fake as you practice giving compliments, ask yourself what you have to lose by voicing one positive observation.

As those perks circulate…in…out…in…out…both giver and receiver are transformed. It’s a win-win situation.

I am a gracious recipient of the good things others have to say about me. As I broaden my focus, I become more in tune with the amazing goodness in others.

Meditation Twenty-Seven

Large streams from little fountains flow; tall oaks from little acorns grow.

~David Everett

At the outset of our strange new life we are intensely focused on survival, on getting through the seconds, minutes and hours of the day. One day at a time is all we can handle. In the process, we become more in tune with our unique rhythms, and more responsive to our needs. We learn our limits and set boundaries.

As we heal we gain confidence. We sense that we are capable of so much more, and find ourselves longing to stretch, to reach farther.

Do you dream of becoming?

Go with it. Take your wildest dream, make a plan to achieve it, and do one thing that will make it real for you now.

Think BIG. Start small. Bit by bit, day by day you’ll get there.

I believe that all things are possible. One day at a time, my dreams are coming true.

Meditation Forty-Nine

The cycle of living is living in me.

Have you ever wondered if what you have to share is enough? Big enough to be noticed? Good enough to be worthy of another’s time? Special enough to be remembered?

Stop wondering.

What you have to share today is exactly right. Embrace and express it. Whether you are aware of it or not, it does make a difference and will live on in everything you touch—including us, your kin in recovery. Each one of us, in turn and together, emerges from the dark, moves through shadows, reflects light. We are in concert—a melody of doubt and certainty, beginnings and endings, give and take.

What you have is more than enough. Stop wondering, and share.

Beginning now.

“You are a child of the universe no less than the trees and the stars;

you have a right to be here. And whether or not it is clear to you,

no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.”

~Max Ehrmann

I am. And I have something to share. That’s enough for everyone, including me.

Completing Your Paintings

When painting the Dark/Light series, I usually had three or four boards on the go at one time, which meant I had up to sixteen works in progress. This made it possible to ignore pieces I was unsure of until I was ready to complete them.

Whether you are working with one board or several, if you have difficulty deciding when a piece is finished, leave it alone for awhile. Return, admire, and ask if you’re ready to let it be what it is. Some of my paintings were actually complete after the first color application (see Week Sixteen, Breathing, and Week Twenty-Three, Morning). If you get a feeling that your painting works just as it is, move on. If not, ask what it wants to be. Start a dialogue with your inner muse and ask for inspiration. If the muse remains silent, try adding a bold brush stroke or motif to your painting. Sometimes the simplest change is enough to inspire.

Should you absolutely dislike what you see, try using the Reverse technique. Above all, don’t be discouraged. There is far more going on than creating images. You are creating recovery. Healing is taking place.

I can tell you that all the pieces do fall into place; the techniques do become absorbed and some, even invented, as soon as you see yourself in the painting. It is then that the great dialogue with yourself begins…

~Jeanne Carbonetti

With practice, you will become more comfortable with the process. You may become so immersed that you lose track of time, and even find yourself reluctant to end the painting session. So much to explore, so much to be discovered!

To help bring each session to a close, and to prepare yourself for the rest of your day, take a few minutes to tidy up your work/play area. Don’t rush. Enjoy the ritual of re-entry to the world around you. Clean your brushes. Empty your water jars. Tighten the caps on your paints. Wipe the table…

When you feel that all of the paintings on your board are done, leave them to dry. In a day or so you can remove the tape. Do so by lifting one corner and pulling it gently towards yourself, rather than straight across the edge of the paper. This helps prevent the paper from tearing. Peel one strip at a time, turning the board as needed to work your way around the painting.

Always sign and date your work. If you don’t want to interrupt the flow of the images on the front of your paper, sign the back. A waterproof pen is best but almost any will do as long as it makes clean, clear, permanent marks. If you are inspired with a theme for your work, give it a title. This can be written on the back of the paper also or, if you dare, on the front.

In the pages of Creating Recovery yet to come, you may be inspired to do any number of things with your creations. In the meantime, enjoy the process of bringing them to life.
